cónocht an earraigh

cónocht an earraigh *

*Irish for Spring Equinox

Like a girl in a coma waking in bed
the land slowly regains her memory
of swollen rain cloud cloak of mist
folded on rowan, alder and wych elm

Knowing the smoldering heart insists
swallows dip in sweeps overhead
renewing with twig and dirt in beak
the little mud huts under the eaves

She sings a spell on mountain hares
turning them to wood bark brown
the fox kit yelp is high and strong
The titmouse song rings her ear, yes

When rooks return to highland nests
it is all her doing and all her care
as rivers are clear, women are sweet
nuzzling otters will play and fuck

The roebuck clears a thicket in sun
wild apple, hazel, walnut come back
the maiden is three yet one, no one
nothing can stop the will of earraigh.
